Part 4 of my Inspired By… Series.
What inspires you to write?
Music is one of the most inspiring things in this world, and conveniently, you can have this inspiration playing while you write. Music has been a great inspiration for me, for the most part because of movies – when you watch a movie with a great soundtrack, the songs carry the feeling of scenes to new heights.
My favourite example would have to be Kiki’s Delivery Service – it’s a brilliant animated film, by Studio Ghibli, which has my absolute favourite soundtrack. I quite often listen to the soundtrack while writing, to carry the feelings and ideas of the movie with me.
If you haven’t tried it yet, give a shot at listening to music while you write. I’d recommend mostly songs without a great deal of singing; ones you can keep in the background, and still retain your train of thought. For me Jazz, Blues, and movie and game soundtracks are probably some of my favourites to listen to while writing. To each their own, though, so find the music that works for you!
Sometimes the lyrics of a song can inspire you, too – don’t let that inspiration go to waste! Put pen to paper (or just whack away at the keyboard), and see where it takes you. Sometimes that feeling will take your story running off in a whole other direction when you start writing. My story Tomorrow was inspired by the song “Better Man” by Pearl Jam.
Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what genre do you listen to? Do you have any stories inspired by a favourite song?
