Part 2 of my Inspired By… Series.
What inspires you to write?
Books, of course, are probably one of the biggest inspirations for a writer. I feel sorry for the writer of the first ever book!
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but in writing it goes further than imitation. Your idea might begin in an insignificant line, in some little remark one of the characters make, but when you pick up an idea, what happens after that is all you! All you have is a little idea, and you’ll nurture it, and make it grow into a tale of its own.
Here’s an exercise for you, if you’re stuck for a story idea – take your favourite book, and think of what part made it your favourite. Take the essence of that, and change it up, make it yours!
You can even follow in the footsteps of a book, and write one in the same spirit…just don’t follow the example of Eragon, and stitch a bunch of books together!
My main inspirations have to be the Harry Potter series, Tomorrow When the War Began, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and the Mistborn trilogy. Honestly, though, you probably wouldn’t see much of them in what I’ve written, because I couldn’t possibly copy them, and I enjoy writing off on random tangents.
What’s your favourite book? Do you have a favourite phrase, or line, that just ‘gets’ you? I’d love to hear about it!
